Smart Home Study

Hands holding a phone wirelessly connected to devices in a home. Text: Participants needed for a research study on home automation and energy use

We are looking for people to participate in a research study investigating home automation and home energy management. The study would involve our researchers and a professional electrician setting up the technology in your home, four months of using the technology as you would in your daily life, a brief weekly online survey (~5 minutes), and two virtual interviews. This study takes place in your home and you will be compensated ($100). You get to keep all technologies installed in your home (a smart thermostat, a smart door lock, and smart bulbs and plugs).

Participation involves:

  • Researchers and a professional electrician setting up the technologies in your home
  • Downloading and using an iOS app
  • 2 virtual interviews
  • Weekly online surveys for 4 months

To participate, you must be:

  • Aged 21-55 years
  • A home owner
  • Responsible for paying your household’s utility bill
