Maureen Linden and Nathan Moon delivered presentations at the 2016 Accessing Higher Ground conference in Westminster, CO, November 15-18, 2016. Maureen presented “Access to Online Courses: The Perspective of Students with Vision Impairment,” which presented findings from qualitative interviews of students with disabilities enrolled in online post secondary education.

Helena Mitchell attended the 2016 CTIA – Super Mobility convention September 6-8th, 2016

Dr. Mitchell was an invited speaker for the CTIA Accessibility Outreach Initiative Forum on Wednesday, September 7th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The topic is “5G and its Impact on the Accessibility Community.” The session discussed 5G technologies and its expected capabilities including what this means for accessibility. The promise of next-generation benefits for the consumer as we move closer to a connected future was also explored.

Helena Mitchell attended a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine workshop on “The Future of Emergency Alert and Warning Systems: Research Directions” sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security on September 1st, 2016

Helena Mitchell was an invited participate in a workshop that focused on results from DHS-sponsored wireless emergency alerts research. Dr. Mitchell discussed findings from two DHS funded research and development grants to CACP and how these R&D results have contributed to improving emergency alerts that are accessible to people with disabilities. Her presentation also identified research gaps and suggestions for future research and development activities to create a platform that includes ASL, phone alerting features, and accessible solutions for timely and effective alerting.

Paul Baker presented a paper on the Regions of Innovation: Technological and Scientific Networks as Drivers for Socio-Economic Development panel, and chaired the “Impact of Public Policy on Innovation, Location, and Networks of Collaboration” Roundtable as Co-chair of RC-11 (Research Council on Science and Technology) for International Political Science Association (IPSA) 24th World Congress of Political Science in Poznan, Poland, July 23-28, 2016.

Maureen Linden and Nathan Moon recently attended the 2016 RESNA NCART Conference, which was hosted in Arlington, Virginia, from July 10-14, 2016. This joint conference of RESNA, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America and the National Coalition of Assistive and Rehab Technology (NCART) featured presentations on assistive technology and engineering solutions for people with disabilities. Maureen and Nathan both participated in the RESNA Board of Directors meeting on July 11, 2016.

Helena Mitchell attends "Broadband 2021 Workshop" at NSF, June 15-17, 2016

Helena Mitchell attended an invitation-only workshop, "Broadband 2021" held June 16th and 17th at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Arlington, VA. The workshop, organized by Penn State's Institute of Information Policy, was intended to help shape the future research agenda for broadband and help ensure all members of the U.S. society benefit from new developments in broadband. Dr. Mitchell briefly addressed current applications-related challenges in the opening session.

Christina Touzet attended and presented at the NENA conference on Monday, June 13th for the Accessibility Education and Training session. Christina presented a presentation titled, “Accessible Emergency Alerts for People with Disabilities,” on how alerting and warning systems can provide the public with life-saving information quickly. Research has shown that Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are not always effective for people with disabilities.
