Hurrex 2014

DeeDee Bennett attended the State-Wide Hurricane Evacuation Exercise (Hurrex 2014) in Macon, Georgia May 6th, where she participated as an observer. The exercise was a joint operation of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross and Department of Human Services. The mission was to evaluate how shelter staff comply with real world operations in the event of an emergency.

Healthy Environments and Active Lifestyles (HEAL) Open House

The 6th Annual Healthy Environments and Active Lifestyles (HEAL) Open House was held on April 22, 2014 at 5:00pm-8:30pm. The event feature student projects and ongoing research from many organizations within Georgia Tech, including the Wireless RERC, the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA) and the Institute for People and Technology (IPaT).

Helena Mitchell attended the 2014 BEA/NAB Conventions

Helena attended the Broadcast Education Association convention as a judge for the Law & Policy division and also the National Association of Broadcasters convention where she will be assisting the FEMA IPAWS program staff in the exhibit area. Stop by the exhibit floor to learn more about the various FEMA projects especially those which address the need for creating accessible alerting for vulnerable populations. All the activities occured April 5-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Nathan W. Moon presented at UGA Regional Institute on STEM Education

Nathan W. Moon delivered two presentations with colleagues at the University of Georgia's Regional Institute on STEM Education on Saturday, April 5, 2014. “BreakThru: E-Mentoring to Support Students with Disabilities in STEM” presented some highlights from the NSF-supported Georgia STEM Accessibility Alliance, including a discussion of electronic mentoring (e-mentoring) and its efficacy as part of GSAA’s BreakThru project. Moon serves as the Georgia Tech co-PI for GSAA, which is a collaborative between UGA and Georgia Tech.

Nathan Moon Named Co-PI for NSF BreakThru Project

Dr. Nathan W. Moon has been named as Co-Principal Investigator for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Georgia STEM Accessibility Alliance (GSAA) and the BreakThru Project, a collaborative effort between the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology. The goals of this initiative are to increase student confidence and participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classes.

  • Future of Disabilities: Is Technology Failing Us?, Friday, March 21st @ 8:00am, presented by Salimah LaForce.

Dave Stone listed as a Jezebel Magazine “Tweet Elite”

David Stone, former CACP Information Analyst, made the list of Jezebel Magazine’s 2014 “Tweet Elites” with special recognition for his savvy use of social media. In addition to his former management and research duties at CACP, he was also a music producer and a local recording artist, with music featured on MTV, E! and Oxygen. In addition, he joined the “Tweet Elites” for January because of his knack for writing witticisms in 140 characters or less. His tweet status was helpful to CACP’s social media sponsored projects. CACP Awarded Funding from DHS

On September 30th, CACP was notified by the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA, and Division of the National Continuity Program Directorate of a grant from the IPAWS program: IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert and Warning System) Alerts for People with Disabilities or Language Differences. The award was for approximately $500,000 for one year – September 30, 2013 – September 29, 2014.

CACP joined Task Force on Quality of Life for Older Adults

September 5, 2013. Helena Mitchell and James White joined the Georgia Tech task force on “enhancing the quality of life for older adults.” The task force is an initiative to tackle multiple “grand challenges” associated with enabling older adults and those with functional limitations to live independently and maintain a high quality of life. James White contributed to the breakout group on “social connectedness,” that identified three grand challenges: Visioning Independent and Vigorous Aging, or VIVA; Building the Care Network that Works; and Supporting Social Integration.

Nathan Moon Awarded RESNA “Rookie” Award

Dr. Nathan Moon recently was awarded the “Rookie” Award by RESNA, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America. One of major awards offered by RESNA, the “Rookie” award is given annually to recognize new members who have made significant contributions, provided leadership, and have made an impact to RESNA during their first several years of participation. Dr. Moon was recognized for his leadership of the RESNA Government Affairs Committee, which he continues to lead.

Helena Mitchell appointed to Georgia Tech President’s Committee on Disabilities and Access

Helena has been appointed by Dr. Bud Peterson, President of Georgia Tech to serve on the committee which is charged with broad oversight responsibilities to ensure that Georgia Tech meets its responsibilities and obligations under the ADA and related laws. The appointment is for two years.
